About our Ensemble and its History

Classical Jam is a string ensemble whose members have come together because we share a love of making music. Our members come from Ardoch, Renfrew, McDonalds Corners, Godfrey, Almonte, Perth and Lanark, Ontario. The original group of five, encouraged by our founder, Cynthia Carver, first met playing Celtic music in the Blue Skies Community Fiddle Orchestra in Maberly. We decided we wanted to widen our musical horizon from “fiddle music” to classical music. At first, we played pieces largely from the baroque, classical and romantic periods. As time went by, we decided to expand our repertoire to include jazz, pop, folk, Celtic as well as music from many countries. Partly this was just for fun, and partly because we found that our audiences appreciated hearing a variety of music – some pieces to sing along with, some just to listen to, and some to remember times gone by.

Ruthanne Fryer, our conductor is a retired music teacher who has pulled us together and helped us to play better as an ensemble. She and Steve Fryer bring us new music and often compose the arrangements – matching them to our skill level and our particular instruments.
We started performing in 2024 and have played in seniors' residences and nursing homes in Perth and Smiths Falls and will be playing in other parts of Lanark County (Almonte, Carleton Place, etc) in the future. We have enjoyed putting on Christmas Concerts, a strawberry social, and other musical afternoons. Our audiences seem to have enjoyed us too - they invite us back.
We hope that our music enriches the lives of our listeners and brings back memories of happy times.
